Hockey skates
The original hockey skates were made of leather with a plasticized sole, a hard toe, and a safety tip at the rear. To 
provide even greater protection against cutting, a ballistic-proof nylon was introduced. Parts of a hockey skate
Blade
Hockey skates’ blades are riveted directly onto the boot’s base in general. The short, light blade that are found on hockey skates helps players with quick stops and speed. A hockey skate’s boot usually measures 4 to 5 inches or 10 to 13cm from the sole, which is rather short. Protecting skaters’ feet from the blades of other skates, the boot is reinforced with extra layers of leather at the toe and plastic caps. A hockey skate’s boot is made to be rigid with reinforcements in the ankle purposely to provide the foot and the ankle with the support they need when skating or performing jumps and moves. Hockey skate construction
A hockey skate has three main components: the plastic holder, steel runner, and the skate boot. Holders’ and runners’ construction and style vary depending on the skate manufacturer and the brand. They all serve the same purpose though: providing free movement on the rink. The skate boot, on the other hand, has seven components which will be discussed later.
Holder
One of the two most basic parts of the skate, the holder is a molded plastic piece that is riveted to the bottom of the skate boot. Attached to them usually with screws or other fastening mechanism or device are steel runners.
Runner
The runner is the second of the two most basic components of a hockey skate. This is what you may think of as the blade on the skate. The runner is the steel strip that makes contact with the ice’s surface. They are securely inserted into the affixed molded plastic holder.
- Quarter package – the quarter package, also known as the boot shell, supports inserts and holds the padding. It is stitched with precision to target specific areas for optimal support in the boot as well as flexibility.
- Ankle padding – simply put, ankle padding is the foam inserted to the quarter package for support and comfort.

- Foot bed – the foot bed is a padded insert at the skate boot’s bottom upon which the foot rests; foot beds are usually removable.
- Liner – liner is the surface material that is found inside the boot; it contains the boot’s padding and provides a comfortable and secure fit.
Features of a good hockey skate
The differences between low end and high end skates start to become more apparent at this point. High end and modern skates feature easily broken-in materials, heat-moldable linings that are made of comfortable, lightweight, and strong materials, moisture-wicking linings, heel counters for improved support, quarter padding for additional support, structure, and comfort, hinged ankles for better flexibility, and lightweight, sharp, and strong blades.
Things to consider when choosing a hockey skate
Foot size
Your foot size will ensure fit, and the most common way to define it is through the length and width of the foot. This is definitely a good start, but the skate also needs to complement the foot’s whole size and shape anatomically as too little or too much space within the skate can cause unwanted movement of the foot within the boot cavity, leading to friction-related injuries such as heel spurs, bunions, bumps, and blisters.
